In the third chapter of this book Adeline talks about her nai nai (nana) how her feet hurt every day non stop as when she was younger and in the older days of china’s history all the children that had big feet would have to get them bound. This is the art of bending the toes underneath the foot to make them smaller. They had them strapped every day so their toes would stay in that particular place. Nai nai said that her feet never stop hurting and that Adeline should be very grateful for her own lovely normal feet. Also in this chapter, Adeline is rewarded each week with her silver brooch. She starts getting some attention from her father as she NEVER does. Adeline thinks that if she wins the brooch each week her father would love her more and admire her brooch and give her more attention from it.
